Ce recueil d’essais honore la mémoire du regretté Pandit N.R. Bhatt, qui a contribué aux recherches pionnières sur l’histoire du sivaïsme menées dans les institutions françaises de recherche à Pondichéry depuis leur création, notamment par ses éditions critiques d’ouvrages sanskrits du Saiva-siddhanta. C’est également à N.R. Bhatt que l’on doit d’avoir rassemblé à Pondichéry ce qui reste, encore aujourd’hui, la plus importante collection de manuscrits sivaïtes au monde, reconnue en 2005 comme Mémoire du Monde par l’UNESCO. Après une préface sur la vie de N.R. Bhatt et une bibliographie de son œuvre, seize contributions couvrent divers aspects de l’histoire du tantrisme, ainsi que du rituel et de la doctrine sivaïtes ; deux articles traitent d’archéologie et d’iconographie et une dernière contribution publie pour la première fois un récit du siège de Pondichéry en 1778 datant du XVIIIe siècle.
