xv+363; opening end-gutters now repaired with brown cloth tape (endpapers being light brown) which looks reasonably acceptable, two internal gatherings slightly loosening with consequent slight gutter openings but these quite secure, otherwise internally clean, though faint marginal browning throughout of little consequence, small faint brown squashed bug stain lower t.p. and facing half-title verso, previous early owner's blue stamps to half-title: 'F Byrne' and 'FJB'. Beveled edge decorated brown cloth covers with clean bright boards but spine darkened and five small holes to joints, top spine frayed but this now internally reinforced and further deterioration hopefully averted, some dustiness to top edge. Author notes on his 1872-dated 'Postscript to the English Edition' (on p.ix) that he had finished Section 2 (on 'What are we?' before the publication of Darwin's Descent of Man, though is gratified to find their views in 'remarkable agreement'. An attractive copy despite faults.
