Spine cloth frayed with losses at heel; spine's paper title label missing; undecorated boards quite stained and soiled with surface paper peeled; board edges worn. Antiquarian ink and pencil inscriptions for M.W. Mabry, Augusta, Georgia (likely Dr. Matthias W. Mabry, 1821-1902) on front free endpaper; foxing/toning and moisture tidelines prevalent throughout. Binding is firm. MANUAL OF PATHOLOGY AND PRACTICE was first published in 1839 by Charleston's Observer Office Press which, according to OCLC entries, was only 204 pages. This 240 page second edition is a Charleston imprint by circumstance of its title page but the book (per a statement upon title leaf verso) was printed in New Haven, Connecticut by Benjamin Lewis Hamlen (1791-1864) who served as printer to Yale College from the 1830s to the 1850s. Coincidently Dickson was a Yale graduate and presented the annual Phi Beta Kappa Address at his alma mater in 1842 so it seems quite likely the Dickson arranged for this second edition while traveling in conjunction with his oratorical obligation. A Charleston native, polymathic Dickson was a poet and writer in addition to his active career as a physician.
