Grant's dual victories at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson were the first major Union victories in the western theater, allowing for the advance of the Union armies into Tennessee, and won Grant the nickname of "Unconditional Surrender." "When leaguered Buckner opens to display / The flag of mercy, floating o'er the parapets / The messengers of death are stayed / While patriot hearts beat wild with new found joy / The woods and blood-stained hills are made / To ring with shouts of Union and victory.".
