James WYLD the Younger [1812 -1887], was the leading cartographer during the Victorian Age, and he was also appointed "Geographer to the Queen," per the annotation to this map. He was located at Charring Cross East, London. See below for more about Wyld. . * THIS IS A LARGE ARTICULATING MAP OF CHINA & SURROUNDING AREA . This is an excellent example of the 'large format' folding map of China. This consists of seven individual map parts to make a single large map. Each part is hand-colored, showing each province in a different color. The water, ocean is in a pale blue. The work is copper-etched printed. In the lower right is a cartouche, showing author, title, miles, British miles and Chinese Li [Chinese miles]. The work is clean and solid without any blemishes. The map displays from just above 40 degrees North, to just below 20 degrees south; from just before 100 degrees west to just past 125 degrees east. . Included in this map from the left is Singpho's Tributary to Birmah, Tibet, source of the Hwang Ho [Yellow or the Yangtze River]. . All of the Chinese provinces: Tsing-Hai [Qing hai], Desert of Shammo or Gobi, Sihai or Koko Nor/Blue Lake, Yunnan, Szechuan. Kansu, Hirat Toumei [at the top], Ottous, Chensi, Kweichow, Kwangse, Annam, Hainan, Kwangtung, Honan, Houpe, Honan, Chansi, Petch Li, Chantong, Nganhoei, Kiangsi, Fuhkien, Tche-Kiang and at the top and right: Leao Tong. . COREA, LOO CHOO ISLANDS, FORMOSA, TIBET, BURMA, MONGOLIA, TAIWAN, and related areas: . Showing all of Corea, The Yellow sea and to the far right, Kiusiu [Kyushu, Japan], Quelpart Island [Korea], Loo Choo Islands [Okinawa], Madjicosemah [Tributary to Loo choo Islands], Formosa or Tai Ouan Island, Pescadores, Banks of Formosa, Formosa Channel and the Bashee & Babuyan Islands [Philippines], below that to the tip of Luzon, and the [South] China sea. . *** CONDITION: . THE MAP: The map is in original and excellent condition. The whole map is linen cloth backed, with very clean white cloth. The hand-coloring is beautifully applied and done in the period of the map. . *** THE SLIP CASE: . The map folds down to be 12.5 x 21.5 cm., and has two back sides in the same red cloth as the matching red cloth covered slip case has. These two cloth covers are in bright, original condition. These two red cloth panels have four small dark 'thumb pull' marks, where the case is indented to allow the fingers to pull it out of its case. The map has been inserted in both direction, leaving a small darkened thumb pull at teach end, else very clean and solid. . The red cloth-covered slip case matches the above red cloth panels. The slip case is solid. It has the original exterior paper label laid down to the front cover. This label has been exposed as usual, it has some minor dustiness, two small part missing, a couple of nicks here & there, by and large very good. . There are two ink signatures on the slipcase cover label at the top and bottom, reading: . a. Mrs. A.E. Tolle Mache a relation to Baron Tolle Mache. b. Alan Sillitoe [1928-2010] a famous British writer. . Please see below for more information on these two famous previous owners. . *** . MORE ABOUT JAMES WYLD, THE CARTOGRAPHER: . James [the elder] and his son, James [the younger] published a large number of reliable maps for the Queen, documenting the lands of the Empire, and especially in the case of Hong Kong, maps of newly acquired lands. . This current map and others about China were drawn up by Wyld to illustrated to the Queen, British economic activity, as well as to document new lands acquired after the First Opium War [1839-.
