4to. 9 x 10.75 inches. [4] + xx + 264 + 80 + [2] pp. Separate half title for Tomus II. All text in Latin. Original sugar paper boards with old paper spine now renewed. Many pages uncut. Extremities worn, flyleaves browned and scattered foxing throughout, largely confined to margins. Early inscription on endpapers and London bookseller's label. Decorated by title page vignette. The De Architectura of Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, the Roman first century BC architect and military engineer, a book which became greatly influential in the Renaissance from the fifteenth century onwards. This notable edition by the German politician and scholar, August Rode (1751-1837) remained standard well into the twentieth century.
