History and fiction are poetically entangled to retell modern Nicaraguan history. In 1907 Rub�n Dar�o, the legendary poet, writes the famous verse, Margarita, est� linda la mar, on the fan of a nine-year-old girl. Fifty years later, the same girl plays a role in the plot to assassinate the dictator Anastasio Somoza.

1907. Le�n, Nicaragua. Durante un homenaje que le rinde su ciudad natal, Rub�n Dar�o escribe en el abanico de una ni�a uno de sus m�s hermosos poemas: "Margarita, est� linda la mar...".

1956. En un caf� de Le�n una tertulia se re�ne desde hace a�os, dedicada, entre otras cosas, a la rigurosa reconstrucci�n de la leyenda del poeta. Pero tambi�n a conspirar. Anastasio Somoza visita la ciudad en compa��a de su esposa, do�a Salvadorita. Est� previsto un banquete de pompa y boato. Habr� un atentado contra la vida del tirano, y aquella ni�a del abanico, medio siglo m�s tarde, no ser� ajena a los hechos.

About the Author

Sergio Ram�rez, ganador del Premio Alfaguara de Novela con Margarita, est� linda la mar en 1998, naci� en Masatepe, Nicaragua, en 1942. Es parte de la generaci�n de escritores latinoamericanos que surgi� despu�s del boom, y tras un largo exilio voluntario en Costa Rica y Alemania abandon� por un tiempo su carrera literaria para incorporarse a la revoluci�n sandinista que derroc� a la dictadura del �ltimo Somoza. Reemprendi� la escritura con la novela Castigo divino (1988), que obtuvo el Premio Dashiel Hammet en Espa�a, y la siguiente, Un baile de m�scaras, gan� el Premio Laure Bataillon a la mejor novela extranjera aparecida en Francia en 1998. Alfaguara ha publicado tambi�n sus Cuentos completos, con un pr�logo de Mario Benedetti (1998); Mentiras verdaderas (ensayos sobre la creaci�n literaria, 2001); los vol�menes de cuentos Catalina y Catalina (2001) y El reino animal (2007); as� como las novelas Sombras nada m�s (2002), Mil y una muertes (2005), El cielo llora por m� (2008) y La fugitiva (2011), y el libro Adi�s muchachos (2007). Aguilar ha publicado su libro de ensayos Tambor olvidado (2008). Margarita, est� linda la mar gan� adem�s el Premio Latinoamericano de novela Jos� Mar�a Arguedas, otorgado por Casa de las Am�ricas en La Habana.
