MARIUS!: The Third Founder of Rome

In 88 BC, a 69-year-old Gaius Marius, once hailed as the Third Founder of Rome for defeating three fierce German tribes that invaded Italy, was stripped of his citizenship, declared a public enemy, and condemned to death by a Senate dominated by his enemies.

How did this come to be? How did Marius escape his pursuers? How did he regain his citizenship? How was he then elected a consul for the seventh time to become the only Roman to achieve this honor? This book is based on information provided by ancient authors and modern scholars, augmented by a novelist’s imagination to fill in the gaps. It answers those questions and provides many insights on why and how the Roman Republic lost its democratic principles and evolved into a dictatorship and then a realm ruled by an emperor. Today’s reader will see many parallels to events in American history.
