Synopsis

The main objective of a first course in mechanics should be to develop in the engineering student the ability to analyze any problem in a logical and simple way, and to apply a few basic principles perfectly understood for their solution. It is expected that this text, designed for a first static course, as well as the complementary book, Vector Mechanics for Dynamics, will allow the teacher to achieve this goal. GENERAL APPROACH In the initial part of the text, the vector analysis is introduced, which is used in the presentation and exposition of the fundamental principles of mechanics. Vector methods are also used to solve various problems, especially in three dimensions, where these techniques allow the solution to be obtained in a more concise and simple way. However, the emphasis of the book remains on the correct learning of the principles of mechanics and their application to solve engineering problems, so that vector analysis is presented, primarily, as a practical tool. Practical applications are introduced from an initial stage. One of the characteristics of the approach used in these volumes is that particle mechanics has been clearly separated from the mechanics of rigid bodies. This approach makes it possible to consider simple practical applications at an early stage and postpone the introduction of more advanced concepts. El objetivo principal de un primer curso de mecánica debe ser desarrollar en el estudiante de ingeniería la capacidad de analizar cualquier problema en forma lógica y sencilla, y la de aplicar para su solución unos cuantos principios básicos perfectamente comprendidos.
