Historical topics in Volume I include: political history of the state, military history of the state, progress of education, state industrial interests, railroads and navigation, and finance and banking. Biographies and personal memoirs (704 individuals) arranged by county (Autauga-Jackson) account for 800 pages of the volume. Volume II contains articles on Alabama in Federal politics, the medical profession, judicial history, Alabama journalism, and religious history. The 795 biographical histories and memoirs are arranged by county (Jefferson-Wilcox) and comprise 850 pages. The 1500 individuals for whom biographical information is included are listed by name in the individual volume entries. Bibliographers have pointed to "articles by competent writers of considerable value" and cited "interesting and important family history contained in the individual sketches.".
