Quando mor�, dopo oltre vent’anni trascorsi nella clinica psichiatrica di Herisau, Robert Walser lasci� dietro di s� una vecchia scatola da scarpe: conteneva lettere, cartoline, foglietti di ogni genere, buste e ricevute di pagamento, sui quali aveva tracciato minuti colpi di lapis. Che cosa si nascondeva dietro quella micrografia all’apparenza impenetrabile, ultimo mistero trasmessoci dal �pi� solitario fra tutti i poeti solitari�, come lo defin� Sebald? Pazientemente decifrati e qui presentati per la prima volta in italiano, i Microgrammi racchiudono un universo letterario anarchico e ingannevole, in cui prosa e versi, scarabocchio e fiaba si confondono, e ogni parola,ogni frase, ogni racconto, si mescola alla chiacchiera. Eppure, chi vedesse questi minuscoli geroglifici come lo sbocco della sua follia capirebbe molto poco di Walser. La follia, semmai, � quello che precede tutta la sua opera, e che essa deve celare. �Mi aleggia sulle labbra qualcosa che in genere non si dovrebbe mai permettere alle labbra di pronunciare, sicch� riconosco di appartenere al vastissimo gruppo di quei chiacchieroni che, oralmente o per iscritto, assicurano di essere discreti� scrive in queste pagine – e si ha l’impressione che se smettesse di chiacchierare per lui sarebbe la paralisi. Quelle chiacchiere hanno una funzione protettiva. I suoi personaggi escono dalla notte, �l� dove essa � pi� nera, una notte veneziana� ha osservato una volta Walter Benjamin – e in quella notte devono ritornare, come il Minotauro al centro del labirinto.
