Synopsis
From the Introduction- Today, as you are reading this, over one thousand more Americans are diagnosed with a condition involving abnormal function of the human brain. Each year, 13-20 percent of children living in the USA experience some form of mental disorder, and the prevalence is on the rise. (CDC- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Six County Inc.) ADHD/ADD was the most commonly reported with behavioral problems, anxiety, depression and autism following behind. ADHD and Autism are at all time highs with 1 in 10 children diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. While Autism is found in at least 1 in 88 children. (2013 stats say 1 in 50!) Clinical Depression and Anxiety in the U.S. is estimated at 1 in 5 people. Millions of adults and youths as young as 4 play contact sports such as football, hockey, soccer and lacrosse resulting in hundreds of concussions (or mTBI- “mild” Traumatic Brain Injury) each and every single day. Add to that the soldiers returning from at least 2 conflicts (more accurately: “Wars”) who are saved by protective gear that prevents death but cannot prevent damage from the concussive forces inside the human skull, leaving their brains cooking in inflammation, shattering their lives, ruining their relationships. Over a million kids in school right now have difficulty reading due to transposing letters, seeing words “backwords” or letters upside down or backwards. (Dyslexia) Seizure disorders and epilepsy are also rising at an unprecedented rate with no end in sight. These patients’ brains are so unstable that they can’t even maintain the basic homeostatic baseline to function, over-firing when not squashed by inhibitory medications. In Muskingum County alone, Six County Inc. saw an increase in youth with mental problems from 323 in 2008 to 1,196 in 2012! That’s a nearly 400% INCREASE in just the past 4 years. The 3 most common were ADHD, anxiety and depression. (Times Recorder 11/10/13) In Anatomy of An Epidemic, Robert Whitaker correctly points out that when the final analysis is done, pharmaceutical medications are being sought out as the treatment of choice in many cases due to their ease of use, despite the fact that overwhelming evidence points directly to the conclusion that the cure IS worse than the disease. We are now at the point in human history where the medications we take are causing even worse problems than the primary reason we started them in the first place. About the Author
Dr. Russ Schroder graduated with Honors, receiving Bachelors of Science and Doctor of Chiropractic degrees from Palmer College in 1999. In 2011, he completed a 3-year post-doctoral neurology program through the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies, successfully passing the 4-day examinations leading to the certification of Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board and Fellow in the American College of Functional Neurology. He is a national lecturer and Charter Member of the International Association of Functional Neurology and Rehabilitation who has expanded the D-C Chiropractic Neurology Center to assist in the non-drug care of patients with chronic pain disorders (such as Peripheral Neuropathy, Degenerative Disc Disease and Fibromyalgia) and metabolic disorders (ranging from thyroid problems to Diabetes). At the M.I.N.D. Institute for Neurological Development, he works with children and adults suffering from Neuro-developmental disorders (such as ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Learning disorders and Traumatic Brain Injuries). He was certified as a Diplomat in Pastoral Science in 2012 and a Doctor of Pastoral Medicine in 2013 by the Pastoral Medical Association. Heather Bennett spent much of her life traveling to doctors and hospitals for documented conditions, some starting at birth. Her medical records consist of numerous doctors' files, each over an inch thick: from her very first stay in the hospital with jaundice as a premature baby, through being diagnosed with "SJS"/ Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (a "one in a million" adverse reaction to her seizure medication that caused much of her hair and skin to fall off), to a diagnosed "heart condition" (involving the nerves to the heart mis-firing) called P.O.T.S. in which the cardiologist was recommending a pace-maker (at age 35!). Throughout all of this, she developed IBS, eczema and clinical depression. This all changed after a chance encounter with Dr. Russ Schroder, who utilized basic neurological and nutritional principles to give her back her life! She has an Associates degree in Early Childhood Development, spending a decade working with pre-schoolers and developmentally-delayed children. She spent 3 years in social work, helping at-risk infants and toddlers as well as adolescents with mental health issues. She has received extensive training in Neurofeedback and the Interactive Metronome and served as the Director of the M.I.N.D. Institute for Neurological Development since 2012.
