He received degrees from the University of London, University of Cambridge, and University of Pennsylvania. After teaching at Cambridge, the American Society Extension University, and the London Society for the Extension of University Education, he became a professor of English literature at the University of Chicago in 1892. He died at his home in Tunbridge Wells on 15 August 1924. His published works included his two-volume study of The Psalms and Lamentations (1898).
