Language: French. MONASTICON GALLICANUM Collection of 168 plates of topographical views representing the monasteries of the order of Saint Benedict, congregation of Saint-Maur. With two maps of the Benedictine establishments in France. All produced under the care of M. Peigne-Delacourt. With a preface by M. Léopold Deslisle, member of the institute. These remarkable historiographical works were carried out by the members of the congregation of Saint-Maur. However, far from being able to carry out this work for all the abbeys and priories of the order, there was a man, Dom Michel Germain, a friend of Jean Mabillon, who undertook to realize the Monasticon Gallicanum. He had specific notices written accompanied by plates, based on the annals of all the houses that had accepted the reform of the congregation of Saint-Maur. When he died on January 23, 1694, most of the notices had been written and the plates had been engraved. These notices, preserved in the form of isolated notebooks and loose sheets, served, during the 18th century, to various Benedictines who did not always take care to return them to the portfolios to which they belonged. This disorder resulted in the scattering of the notices and the loss of a number of them. The plates of the Monasticon Gallicanum suffered the same fate. A small number of proofs were printed, and the copper plates disappeared without leaving a trace. About ten collections were discovered and bound by various enthusiasts of the 17th and 18th centuries, often mixing foreign prints with this work. The Monasticon Gallicanum consisted of two parts: a historical text and plates representing the abbeys and priories of the congregation of Saint-Maur. These plates show the appearance of these places in the 17th century.
