Author, journalist and member of the First Regiment of New York Volunteers, Lt. Edward Gould Buffum (1820 - 1867) moved to California with his regiment in reponse the Mexican-American War begun in 1846, Following discharge from the army, Buffum remained and tried his hand at panning gold. This is the record of his experiences before he became editor and chief of the Alta California, one of the first newspapers in California, and later special correspondent to the New York Herald.
