Mrs. Wiggs, one of the most famous characters in American fiction, was based on a woman the author met while doing charitable work among the poor in Louisville. The book was a best seller and was made into a stage play and a movie, and has been widely translated. There is a long interesting foreword by Dr. W. F. Axton, who taught at the University of Louisville. He knew the author's work very well, and places it in context with the Authors Club of Louisville, a group of seven or eight women, all living in Louisville at the same time, and virtually in the same neighborhood, who would all receive national attention for their writing.
