This is a remarkable collection of the personal accounts of officers and men who served in the front lines with their machine-guns in one of the most ghastly of wars. in conditions now almost unimaginable, in battles that spread over three continents. The strength of the book lies in the fact that these are the very words of the narrators, complete with characteristic modes of expression and minor unconventionalities of emphasis and spelling. Soon there will be no more survivors to tell the story, and without this record these vivid recollections would be lost for ever.
