With the number of machine-to-machine (M2M)–enabled devices projected to reach 20 to 50 billion by 2020, there is a critical need to understand the demands imposed by such systems. Machine-to-Machine Communications: Architectures, Technology, Standards, and Applications offers rigorous treatment of the many facets of M2M communication, including its integration with current technology.
Presenting the work of a different group of international experts in each chapter, the book begins by supplying an overview of M2M technology. It considers proposed standards, cutting-edge applications, architectures, and traffic modeling and includes case studies that highlight the differences between traditional and M2M communications technology.
- Details a practical scheme for the forward error correction code design
- Investigates the effectiveness of the IEEE 802.15.4 low data rate wireless personal area network standard for use in M2M communications
- Identifies algorithms that will ensure functionality, performance, reliability, and security of M2M systems
- Illustrates the relationship between M2M systems and the smart power grid
- Presents techniques to ensure integration with and adaptation of existing communication systems to carry M2M traffic
Providing authoritative insights into the technologies that enable M2M communications, the book discusses the challenges posed by the use of M2M communications in the smart grid from the aspect of security and proposes an efficient intrusion detection system to deal with a number of possible attacks. After reading this book, you will develop the understanding required to solve problems related to the design, deployment, and operation of M2M communications networks and systems.

Vojislav B. Mišić is a professor of computer science at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His research interests include performance evaluation of wireless networks and systems, including cognitive networks and sensor networks; and software engineering, including software metrics, metamodeling, and cloud computing. He has published around 60 journal papers and more than 130 conference papers in these areas, in addition to six books and nearly 20 book chapters. Prof. Mišić serves on editorial boards of IEEE Trans. Parallel and Distributed Systems, Elsevier Ad hoc Networks, Peer-to-Peer Networks and Applications journal, and Int. Journal on Parallel, Emergent Distributed Systems. He has guest-edited more than ten special issues of journals like EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking; Ad Hoc Networks; International Journal of Parallel, Emergent, and Distributed Systems; Ad Hoc & Sensor Wireless Networks; International Journal of Sensor Networks (IJSNet); and Computer Communications. He is a senior member of the IEEE, and member of ACM and AIS.
Jelena Mišić received her PhD in computer engineering from the University of Belgrade, Serbia, in 1993. She is currently a professor of computer science at the Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada. Her current research interests include performance of wireless networks (including wireless sensor networks, cellular networks such as LTE, and wireless personal area networks), dynamic spectrum access and cognitive wireless networks, network security, and cloud computing. She has published over 80 journal papers and over 130 conference papers in these areas, and she has authored or co-authored two books and more than 20 book chapters as well. Her work has been supported by NSERC Strategic Grant, NSERC CRD grant, AUTO21, CFI New Opportunities grant, and other industrial and academic granting agencies. Prof. Mišić serves as associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology (where she has received Top Editor of the Year awards in 2010 and 2011), Elsevier journals Communication Networks and Ad hoc Networks (where she has been awarded Editor of the Year award in 2009), Wiley Security and Communication Networks, Int. Journal of Sensor Networks, Int. J. of Telemedicine and Applications, and Ad Hoc & Sensor Wireless Networks. She has guest-edited a number of special issues of journals such as EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, Journal of Communications and Networks, Ad hoc Networks, ACM/Baltzer Mobile Networks (MONET), Int. J. of Sensor Networks, Computer Communications, and Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing. She has chaired or co-chaired a number of international conferences including IEEE GlobeCom, WiMob, MASS, BodyNets, MSWiM, IWCMC, QShine, and others.
