Reviews
"What to leave in; what to leave out. That is the question." With quotations, this is especially the issue, as compilers grapple with the fundamental user question: "How will this be of any use to me?" A cadre of scholars aided in gathering this collection of memorable social science views, spiced by generic tidbits added by the editors. Selection criteria include "staying power," frequency of use, important or historical events, material that has diffused into the vernacular, and distinguished observations. Sources used include books, journals, newspapers, correspondence, diaries, and even, in the case of Thomas Jefferson and Karl Marx, tombstone epitaphs. Over 2500 quotations are arranged alphabetically by author, complete with the original date of the source. An extensive bibliography and exhaustive index aid in finding a pertinent item. This handy, one-volume reference is an adjunct to the 18-volume International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (Macmillan and Free Pr., 1968-80) . There is some overlap with other well-known general quotation references, but the citations here are more specifically related to the social sciences. However, beware when citing sources as there are some frustrating anomalies when comparing them. This book is recommended; useful especially for academic or larger public reference collections.
