Synopsis

About the Authors
Dennis D. Long, PhD, ACSW, is professor and the associate dean of the College of Social Sciences, Health, and Education, Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio). Dr. Long previously served as professor and chair of the Department of Social Work at Xavier University and from 2006-2012 was a professor and chair of the Department of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He received his BA in sociology and psychology from Ohio Northern University, MSW from The Ohio State University, and PhD in sociology from the University of Cincinnati. The co-author of five books and numerous articles, Dr. Long s scholarship and teaching has been in the area of macro social work with special interests in community-based and international practice. He serves on the editorial board of the "Journal of Teaching in Social Work "and has been a longstanding member of the National Association of Social Workers and Council on Social work Education. Over the years, Dr. Long has provided leadership on numerous community and national boards, including the Butler County Mental Health Board, Oesterlen Services for Youth, Charlotte Family Housing, and the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.
John Morrison is currently Professor of Social work at Aurora University where he teaches courses in social policy, research, administration and community practice. He served as MSW Program Chair for over a decade. He served as Chair of the Association for Community Organization and Social Administration (ACOSA). He has been a member of the board of directors of the Illinois Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers and continues to provide leadership to its International Network. He is a board member of several agencies in Chicago and has been a member of the Nominating Committee of the Council on Social Work Education. Dr. Morrison taught at the University of Pennsylvania and was Assistant Commissioner of the New York City Community Development Agency and Special Assistant to the Commissioner of the NYC Department of Social Services. He served as director of community centers in Brooklyn, N.Y. Current interests include prevention and development programs and international social work.
Carolyn J. Tice, DSW, ACSW, has been professor and associate dean of the baccalaureate social work program in the School of Social Work, University of Maryland, since July, 2002. Her prior appointment was chair of the Department of Social Work, Ohio University, a position she held for nine years. At Ohio University, she was the first recipient of the Presidential Teaching Award for outstanding teaching, advising, and mentoring. Currently, Dr. Tice teaches a first-year seminar and social welfare policy. She received her BSW from West Virginia University, a MSW from Temple University, and completed her DSW at the University of Pennsylvania where she worked with Hmong refugees. The co-author of four books, Dr. Tice's scholarship focuses primarily on the development of critical thinking skills and social work practice and policy from a strengths perspective. She is a site visitor for the Council on Social Work Education and is on the editorial board of the "Journal of Teaching in Social Work. "Dr. Tice is a nominee for the 2015 McGraw-Hill Award for Excellence in Teaching First-Year Seminars. In 2008 she was named a Fulbright specialist and traveled to Mongolia to assist in the development of social work programs. Other international social work experiences include program development in Portugal, Taiwan, Vietnam, and China. Dr. Tice is a member of the Council of Social Work Education, the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors, the National Association of Social Workers, and the Social Welfare Action Alliance.
