In 1969, as the Vietnam War reaches a boiling point, Jack Tagger makes a choice that could cost him everything-he refuses the draft and goes on the run.

Seeking peace, he hides out on a remote barrier island off Sunset Beach, North Carolina. But what he finds there is anything but sanctuary. Unwittingly, Jack is pulled into a violent land feud between two powerful men-another kind of war, no less dangerous than the one he fled.

When a Native American shaman calls forth the spirit of a long-dead victim of that conflict, Jack must face a final, harrowing decision.
