Magic Feather

Based upon studies of the ways in which children are labeled and treated in schools, including the experience of their own son, the authors determine that the processes that the educational system employs to determine learning disabilities are inaccurateand fallible

A true account of one couple's efforts to find a proper educational placement to meet their son's needs. The authors discuss their rejection of the results of the various tests, their questions about the validity of the tests, and their objection to the academic labeling of children. While the book does provide some information on coping with special educational programs and on available assistance for parents of children with special needs, it presents the issues in a highly critical, one-sided manner. It contains no favorable comments on mainstreaming, special educational programs, or PL 94-142. Provocatively presented, this is recommended for readers who have a balanced background and knowledge in the field of special education. Samuel T. Huang, Northern Illinois Univ. Libs., DeKalb
