A very rare copy of the 1921 edition (First Thus) of Haddon's famous book, complete with the scarce dust wrapper, which has also had the impact over time of preserving the original red colours of the board decoration beneath. Pages are good: tanning around edges and one or two foxing spots only but no inscriptions or notes. Binding of pages to spine is totally tight, but front board is partially detached with webbing a little exposed, though structurally totally sound (see photo of this). Slight give to front board which feels loose when probed because of this but no real issues of imminent detachment or flimsiness. Text block is completely secure. Very rare unclipped DJ is age worn and has a small stain at top left cover, but is all complete, with just the odd nick here and there. Boards underneath (see photos, first photo shows both the red-boarded covers and the blue dust wrapper behind separately) retain their red original design colours. Page facing the title page retains original book adverts. Chapters include: homeopathic magic; contagious magic; talismans and amulets; divination; fetishism. Haddon was a well known British anthropologist and ethnologist, and this work is an essential addition to any collector of the occult, folklore, magic and ritual. An incredibly rare item.
