Small 8vo. Hardcover, Pp. 96. Rare. In very good condition; purple cloth binding, stamped in gilt and blind. Slight shelf-wear to cover with light scuffs; spine has faded, as have the upper edges. Gilt fore-edge. Pages themselves are clean and tight with few small marks throughout. There are two bookplates from George Johnson, a British writer, publisher, collector, magician, and editor of the Magic Wand from 1914 to 1945. One bookplate is pasted on the first clean page, and the other is loose. Advert labels pasted on front and rear end-paper. The title-page says that the book was authored by 'A Mere Phantom', whose identity remains evasive. The 'Fifteenth Thousand' statement on the title-page may have been an invention to promote sales, as there seems to be no proof that the book was released in special editions. Includes various pictures and diagrams for the use of a magic lantern.
