Thomas Mann (1875-1955) based much of his 1924 novel on the experience he and his wife had while she received treatment at a Davos, Switzerland sanatorium. The main character, a young engineer named Hans Castorp, makes the arduous journey to the sanatorium, expecting to return home after a brief stay. However, symptoms of a tuberculosis-like ailment appear, and he ends up staying for seven years. This handsome reprint edition in a translation from the German by H. T. Lowe-Porter. With illustrations by Gonzalo Fonseca. --- In full dark brown faux leather with gilt decorations on covers & spine, three raised spine bands and titling gilt-stamped on spine.
