About this Item
The bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. 8.25 inches tall; 301 [1] pages; illustrated with photographic plates. The dust jacket has the price of $4.50 with sun-fading and wear on the corners and flap edges. Tex Rickard was drawn to action from birth. He grew up amidst the Wild West, becoming a trail cowboy at eleven and a town marshal in his twenties. Ahead of the Klondike gold rush, he ventured to the Yukon Valley, where he dabbled in gambling, fortunes made and lost. As a sports promoter, he orchestrated iconic fights like Joe Gans versus Battling Nelson in 1906 and Jack Johnson against Jim Jeffries in 1910. He achieved renown for the world's first "million-dollar gate" alongside Jack Dempsey, profiting more than the fighters themselves from the Dempsey-Carpentier bout in 1921, which drew 77,328 spectators in Jersey City.
