The Mahavamsa

At the crossroads of legend, faith, and political memory stands the Mahavamsa, the great chronicle of Ceylon. In Wilhelm Geiger's authoritative Mahavamsa English translation, a Sri Lankan history classic emerges in clear, measured prose for modern readers. These pages shaped a civilisation. Composed in Pali as a Buddhist historical chronicle, it traces early Sri Lanka history through the deeds of rulers and monks, revealing how Buddhism in ancient Ceylon became inseparable from the life of the state. This kings of Ceylon chronicle follows dynasties, foundations of monasteries, and pivotal turning points across ancient Ceylon and early medieval Sri Lanka, making it an essential ancient Ceylon history book and a primary source for historians of South Asia and Theravada Buddhism. Geiger's careful Pali text English translation, long valued as a standard Buddhist Pali chronicle translation, opens the Mahavamsa both to general readers drawn to myth-infused history and to specialists seeking a reliable Buddhist studies reference edition grounded in the original language. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. For anyone interested in royal chronicles, sacred narrative, or the deep roots of Sri Lankan identity, this definitive presentation of the Mahavamsa offers enduring insight and a touchstone work for every serious library.
