Ibn Saud's conquest of the Hejaz marked the end of the traditional Mahmal procession from Cairo to Mecca in 1926. As Robinson notes in his opening: "It is very improbable that the Mahmal, which formed such a prominent object in the procession of the "Kiswat en Nabi" at Cairo at the pilgrim caravans from Egypt and Syria, will be seen in the Hejaz again --- The Hejaz is now in the possession of Ibn Sa'ud, a descendant of the great Wahhabist of the 1798-1814 campaigns. The Damascus Mahmal is similar to the one from Egypt but smaller". Here, Robinson discusses the origin of its name, its construction, historical significance, and place in the Hajj caravans.
