In this historical fiction, Kate Minola discovers someone sending coded messages and disrupting Internet traffic from her privately owned Golden Associates' NAP site in China's Xinjiang Province. Kate has to stop the problem before the Chinese government takes over her facility.
Kate's father Bennie and his World War II buddy Luca De Verona, had started her company with a Chinese national; her "Uncle Mike." Bennie and Luca get Luca's son, Pete, to come to China to fix Kate's problem. Kate hates the idea. Kate and Pete are two halves of a critical mass. Kate's two new clients, a French entrepreneur and Uighur clergyman, bring them together to cause an explosion.
Kate's new clients both want to use Kate's NAP site. As Kate tries to figure out what connects them, Pete wrestles with Kate's Internet problem. As Kate wrestles Pete through the world of Chinese customs, she also finds herself wrestling with her feelings about him.
Kate's Frenchman and Uighur clients drive through Xinjiang Province on their way to consolidate their plans as Kate's "Uncle Mike" returns to Shanghai with an announcement. The book ends with help from an old World War II friend and her relationship Pete entering a new phase. This historical fiction weaves a tale of China's tangled relationships of duty, of business, of love and guanxi.
