3 x 5" card, printed on heavy card stock, with a die-cut closed flap as a quarter holder. Rare promotional card issued by Haldeman-Julius Company to advertise the short lived periodical Life and Letters. The recto is printed with a portrait of a youthful E. Haldeman-Julius, describing the periodical. The verso has an ingenious die cut holder to mail in a quarter to subscribe in the card itself, along with blanks for name and address. A legend below notes that the card is patented by J.N. Spies, MFR., Watertown, NY. Your cataloguer wonders how many of these were entrusted to the post with a coin. A short-lived, now rare artifact of the Haldeman-Julius empire, this is the only example we've seen. Near fine with some light toning and a couple of creases.
