Maine Forts (Paperback or Softback)

"Maine Forts" is an authoritative historical survey detailing the strategic fortifications that have protected the Pine Tree State from its colonial beginnings through the early 20th century. Written by Henry E. Dunnack, this work examines the architectural and military significance of the various outposts, blockhouses, and coastal batteries that once defined the Maine landscape.

The book provides an in-depth look at famous sites such as Fort Western, Fort Halifax, and the defensive networks of Portland Harbor, while also exploring lesser-known frontier defenses. Dunnack traces the evolution of military engineering and the geopolitical necessities that drove the construction of these sites, including the struggles between European colonial powers and the defense of American borders during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

Rich in historical detail, "Maine Forts" serves as a vital record of the state's military heritage, offering insights into the life of the garrisons and the preservation of these landmarks. This work is an essential resource for students of New England history, military enthusiasts, and those interested in the preservation of American historical architecture.
