The Victoria Cross was ordered by the Queen herself in the mid-1850's as a way to recognize individual meritorious behavior in the British Armed Forces. The new medal would not recognize birth status or class, and became an egalitarian method to award gallantry and bravery in the presence of the enemy. It remains the most prestigious award available. The first awards ceremony was held in June of 1857 at Hyde Park, where the Queen herself pinned decorations on over 60 veterans of the Crimean War. Her Royal Highness can be seen seated on horseback next to Prince Albert in this print, issued as a supplement to the July 11, 1857 issue of The Illustrated London News. Soldiers and sailors alike line up in full dress uniform to receive the commendation in London's Hyde Park.
