Making Cabinets and Built-ins

Discusses woods, lumber grades, veneers, plywood, and particle board, shows how to read plans, and includes advice on layout, joinery, glue, fasteners, construction techniques, shelves, doors, drawers, and installation

Cabinetsboth built-in and freestandingmay be thought of as consisting of component parts: frames or carcasses, doors, drawers, shelves, tops, and bases or legs. These parts can be made of different materials and put together in various ways to give many styles, although the methods of layout, cutting, joinery, and assembly are basic to all. This book's main thrust is leading the novice through these basic methods, although a few plansmostly for modular kitchen cabinetsare given. Particle and wafer board are included as possible materials along with such traditionals as plywood, hardboard, and lumber. There's a short but good chapter on kitchen planning. Suggested to libraries needing more material in this do-it-yourself area. Popular Science Book Club selection.W.T. Johnston, Coastal Plain Regional Lib., Tifton, Ga.
