A careers section charts the representation of women artists in exhibitions, art magazines and corporate collections. Biographies are provided for each artist, followed by a list of the major group exhibitions of the period, annotated with the names of these artists who participated in them. A variety of essays examine the phenomenon of the rapid development of women artists during the 1970s.
The work of many women artists during the 1970's and the 80's helped foster this re-engagement between art and life by re-emphasizing subjective and social concerns that had been outside the modernist visual lexicon....As members of a new pluralist avant-garde they enlarged the possibilities of art, helping to define a new mainstream that encompassed their work.
For me art accomplishes my own liberation. It makes me stronger.
