Making Sense of Statistical Studies: Teacher's Module

Are hot dogs unhealthy? What percent of people wear their seat belts when driving? Does listening to music hurt students' concentration and ability to study? These are just a few examples of the types of questions students will explore in Making Sense of Statistical Studies (MSSS).

The module consists of 15 hands-on investigations that provide students with valuable experience in designing and analyzing statistical studies. It is written for an upper middle-school or high-school audience having some background in exploratory data analysis and basic probability.

The Making Sense of Statistical Studies Teacher's Module includes supporting resources to help you use MSSS effectively in your classroom. To make the Teacher's Module easier to use, we have included all the pages from the Student Module. Prior to each section and investigation, you will find Teacher Notes that provide the following:

• A descriptive Overview that discusses the big ideas presented in the section/investigation
• Any Prerequisites for knowledge and skills students will need to complete the section/investigation successfully
• A list of Learning Objectives that describe what students ought to know and be able to do as a result of completing the section/investigation
• Teaching Tips from the authors that include in-depth discussion of key terms and concepts, examples, and specific questions from the student investigations
• Possible Extensions of the material discussed in the section/investigation in case you want to go further with your students
• Suggested Answers to Questions for each of the 15 investigations
