Malaya – Manong, Perak. Series L707 (GSGS 4690), Sheet 2M/8, Edition 2-GSGS. Director of Survey, War Office and Air Ministry, 1957. Large colour-printed folding military topographical map, scale 1:63,360 or one inch to one statute mile, approximately 71.5 × 53.3 cm. Prepared under the direction of the Assistant Director of Survey, Far East Land Forces, revised by 84 Field Survey Squadron, Royal Engineers, and drawn and printed by 570 Map Reproduction Troop RE in November 1957. Covering Manong and the surrounding Perak River district south-west of Kuala Kangsar, with detailed representation of roads, tracks, kampongs, rivers, jungle, cultivated land, rubber plantations, contours, spot heights and other topographical information. The printed compilation note records revision from RAF air-survey photography taken between November 1955 and May 1956, supplemented by ground survey revision in October 1957, making this a particularly contemporary cartographic record produced during the Malayan Emergency. An operational example of this precise Sheet 2M/8 is preserved in the Australian War Memorial, having been used by Support Company, 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment during Operation Rubber Legs in February–March 1957, demonstrating the direct military use of the Manong sheet during counter-insurgency operations. Series L707 is represented in major institutional map collections, but individual sheets are unevenly encountered and the 1957 Edition 2-GSGS of Manong appears scarce commercially. Very good overall, with original folding creases, light handling and storage wear and punch holes to the extended filing margin; colours and cartographic detail remain clear. Location: Tube A: Asia.…
