8vo. XVI, 414, (2) pp. With engr. frontispiece with 4 medallion portraits, engr. title page with the title on a rock in an alpine scene, 54 numbered engr. plates (1 folding) and 2 folding leaves with built-up letterpress music, probably set in Breitkopf's type. With the 4 costume plates in hand colour. Later 19th century half cloth with Spanish-marbled sides. First edition of an attractively illustrated account of a journey through Switzerland. The work includes 4 costume plates (2 showing military uniforms, with flags), a description of Balmat and Paccard's first ascent of Mont Blanc, as well as many fine views by J. A. Darnstedt, including the engraved title page. One of the alpine views also serves as a fifth costume plate, but in black and white. The letterpress music is printed in a type built up from small pieces, a system first widely publicized by Breitkopf in the 1750s, and the type used may be Breitkopf's. - In very good condition, with only some slight foxing. Bookplate on front pastedown, showing a pile of three-dimensional letters that could make the name "Erich Lohe". - Lonchamp 2425. Wäber I, 53. Barth 17610. Dreyer 812. Seller Inventory # 28024
