Malevich (Rizzoli Art Classics)

Briefly describes Malevich's life and career, shows sixteen of his major paintings, and includes comments on their composition

Gr 8 Up-- Each of these entries offers more than a dozen full-color, full-page reproductions of major works by a 20th-century artist, collected in a thin, near poster-size volume. The color plates are startling in their clarity and brilliance, allowing for scrutiny of the exciting images of Malevich's cubist compositions and spare Suprematist paintings, Hopper's dramatic cityscapes, and Lawrence's expressionist pictures of African-American life. The biographies that offer a prelude to the pictures are highly professional in their descriptions and analyses of the artists' lives and works; the comments are supported by notes and a list for further reading. The references and compact typography indicate that these volumes are intended for sophisticated readers; also, teachers using artwork in their classrooms will be glad to find these three books in their school libraries. --Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ
