मल्लिका आधुनिक हिन्दी के निर्माता भारतेन्दु हरिश्चन्द्र की वह प्रेमिका थी जिसके संबंध में इतिहास और साहित्य मौन है। भारतेन्दु के घर के पास रहने वाली बाल-विधवा, मल्लिका ने भारतेन्दु से हिन्दी पढ़ना-लिखना सीखकर बांग्ला के तीन उपन्यासों का हिन्दी में अनुवाद किया। उन्हीं अनुवादों ने भारतेन्दु को 'उपन्यास' विधा से परिचित करवाया और इसी से प्रेरणा पाकर वे आधुनिक हिन्दी के निर्माता बने। लेकिन भाग्य की ऐसी विडंबना कि मल्लिका ने जो स्वयं मौलिक उपन्यास लिखा, उसका कहीं कोई ज़िक्र तक नहीं मिलता; जबकि उनका वह उपन्यास हिन्दी का प्रथम उपन्यास माने जाने वाले, परीक्षागुरु, से पहले का है। इतिहास के धुंधलके से गल्प के सहारे मनीषा कुलश्रेष्ठ ने उसी विस्मृत और उपेक्षित नायिका को खोज निकाला है और उसके जीवन पर एक काल्पनिक जीवनीपरक उपन्यास रचा है। मनीषा कुलश्रेष्ठ एक सुपरिचित लेखिका हैं जो कथा साहित्य के कई महत्त्वपूर्ण सम्मान और फ़ैलोशिप प्राप्त कर चुकी हैं। इनके अब तक सात कहानी-संग्रह और चार उपन्यास प्रकाशित हो चुके हैं जिनमें शिगाफ़, पंचकन्या, स्वप्नपाश और किरदार उल्लेखनीय हैं। इनकी कई कहानियाँ विदेशी भाषाओं में भी अनूदित हो चुकी हैं। इनका संपर्क है: manishakuls@gmail.com
