A sentimental novel published in 1771, which presents a series of moral vignettes which the naïve protagonist Harley either observes, is told about, or participates in. Written by Henry Mackenzie, a Scottish lawyer, novelist and writer, remembered mostly as an author. The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia, 1816. An apologue about bliss and ignorance, first published in 1759. Early readers considered Rasselas to be a work of philosophical and practical importance, with critics often remarking on the difficulty of classifying it as a novel. Written by Samuel Johnson, often called Dr Johnson, an English writer who made lasting contributions as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, literary critic, sermonist, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. Bound in full calf. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities and the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Light age toning to the extremities with a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpapers. Very Good.
