© 1962: A stand-alone novel by Philip K Dick. 1st printing of 2001 edition. SF Masterworks 2001 Hardback Series (#III). Light tanning to text block:- Synopsis: The Second World War has been over for seventeen years and people have now had time to adjust to the new order. But it hasn't been easy. The Mediterranean has been drained to produce more farmland, the population of Africa has been almost wiped out, and America has been divided between the Nazis in the East and the Japanese in the West. In the neutral buffer zone that divides the two superpowers lives the man in the high castle, the author of an underground bestseller, a work of fiction that offers an alternative theory of world history in which the Axis powers didn't win the war. The novel offers hope to the oppressed and is a rallying call for those who dream of overthrowing the occupiers. But could it be more than that? Could it be a glimpse of the truth?:- Review(s): "'The Man In The High Castle' won the Hugo Award when it was first published, the only Philip K Dick work so honoured, and it remains the finest alternative world novel ever written. Subtle, sombre, complex and beautifully characterised, it is a profound and significant book that explores the nature of reality and authenticity, and tackles the issue of evil head on. Elegantly and wittily written, always surprising, 'The Man In The High Castle' is an unforgettable masterpiece":- (original cost £14.99).…

From the Back Cover
The single most resonant and carefully imagined book of Dick s career. New York Times
It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.
This harrowing, Hugo Award winning novel is the work that established Philip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction while breaking the barrier between science fiction and the serious novel of ideas. In it Dick offers a haunting vision of history as a nightmare from which it may just be possible to wake.
Philip K. Dick (1928 1982) wrote 121 short stories and 45 novels and is considered one of the most visionary writers of the twentieth century. His work is included in the Library of America and has been translated intomore than twenty-fivelanguages. Eleven works have been adapted to film, including Blade Runner (based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), Total Recall, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly.
