Doubleday & McClure Company, New York, 1899. First edition. Frontispiece. 134 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Original green cloth, lettered in gilt. Border ruled. Head and tail frayed, solid dent to front board and some damage to rear board at edges. Brentano’s book seller page on rear paste down. Frontispiece, very nice. Some gapping at signatures ppc70-71, otherwise binding is solid. Text block free from markings. Apparent second printing of first edition as “Milkless appears on P 35, ln. 6. rather than fruitless. 134 pp. 1 vols. 8vo First presented as a public poetry reading at a New Year's Eve party in 1898, the is a poem by American poet Edwin Markham, inspired by Jean-François Millet's painting L'homme à la Houe, a painting interpreted as a socialist protest about the peasant's plight.
