Every Man His Own Guide to the Falls of Niagara: Or the Whole Story in a Few Words (Classic Reprint)

Discover how Niagara Falls reveals the history of the land and the science behind its power. This book blends travel observations with early geology, offering a clear view of how the falls have changed over time and what that tells us about our planet.

From measured waterfalls and rock formations to fossil remains and fresh-water deposits, the narrative connects dramatic scenery with careful reasoning. It examines how the river once stood at a higher level, how limestone and other layers influence the fall, and what traces remain in the landscape for future study.

• Notes on shells found on Goat Island and what they suggest about water levels and past environments.

• Discussion of Mastodon remains buried in ancient deposits, linking fossils to geological history.

• Explanations of how the falls recede, the dip of beds, and the changing height over time.

• Observations about how different falls and barriers shaped the river’s path and landscape.

Ideal for readers curious about natural history, geology, and the way travel narratives illuminate long-term changes in familiar places.
