When Secondo Pia was accorded the unique privilege of photographing the Holy Shroud of Turin for the first time in 1898, he little dreamed of the furore that would ensue. For, to the consternation of churchmen and scientists, the negative revealed the imprint of a face on the cloth. Medical analysis confirmed that the man in the shroud had been scourged, his side pierced. Was Pia's negative then, a photograph of Christ himself?
