Is it helpful, is it even relevant, to persist in presenting a view of personal, individual sin, now that we know most human suffering to be due to complex causes, and eradicable only be concerted social action? These are questions which arise spontaneously in a post-Darwinina, post-Marxian world, and they constitute the 'existential' point of departure for Fr. Schoonenberg's radical re-examination of the whole 'problem' of sin. By returning to the biblical source of our doctrine, he succeeds in restoring a view of sin as primarily collective and historical. Just as salvation is by faith through incorporation into Christ's body, the living and historical church, so sin is essentially a personal entering into the historical body of those who have rejected Christ. Since the later theological development of original sin is also open to the same collective, historical interpretation, Christian teaching on sin emerges as not only compatible with, but in fact complementary to, modern evolutionary and sociological theory. And in this context of collectivity, individual sin makes good sense. Sprache: english. Seller Inventory # 41185AB
