About the Author

About the author Ram Jagessar “The Man Who Broke the Lottery” is Ram Jagessar’s first published novel, but hardly his first publication. His history of publications goes back over 40 years when his political articles and literary works were published in the University of the West Indies student magazine Embryo and other local magazines in Trinidad. His Indian resistance works were published in the underground magazine Mukdar in the mid seventies, and he later edited the book “The First Year of Mukdar” published on amazon.com. He also wrote for the Indian resistance group Indian Revival and Reform Association (IRRA) and was secretary of the IRRA group Indian Arrival Day Committee which launched Indian Arrival Day. Ram spent over eight years as a journalist in senior positions in the Trinidad Express and Trinidad Guardian, and developed a side career as editor of company newsletters and public relations consultant. Ram migrated to Canada in 1989 and worked as a journalist for the Sudbury Star, and as magazine editor and public relations specialist for several organizations. He spent nine years as a columnist for Toronto’s Indo Caribbean World specializing in Indo Caribbean cultural affairs, and was editor of his own paper the Indo-Caribbean Times. He was secretary and public relations writer for the Indo-Trinidad Canadian Association and the Indian Arrival and Heritage Month Committee, the latter being the group that developed the South Asian Heritage Month festival in Ontario. He was one of five Caribbean Canadian poets who published the poetry collection “Roraima” also on amazon.com. Ram was the editor of “Roraima” and seven other books by Indo Caribbeans resident in Toronto. He won a cash prize for his short story “Anand’s Fall” now being expanded into a full novel on the comic side of immigrant arrival in Canada. He is working on a book on Indo Caribbeans in Toronto scheduled for completion in 2019, and his memoirs scheduled for 2020, while serving as an active member of the Caribbean Canadian Writers Group (CariCan) based in Toronto.
