The Man Who Never Hurried

Everybody is selling you a speed.

Wake at five and grind. Or quit, breathe and move to the hills. Two industries. Both selling a pace. Neither of them yours.

This book is selling neither. There are no steps in it, no numbers, no morning routine, and nothing at all to do on Monday.

What it has instead is a grocer in Madurai.

He opened his shop just after five every morning for as long as anyone in the family could count, and he was never once in a hurry. He ran one shop. He never opened a second. He put three daughters through college on a grocer’s margins and out into good lives. And he kept one rack behind his counter deliberately empty for the whole of his working life, without ever saying a word about it to anybody.

He left no advice. The life was the teaching.

Not fast, not slow. And eight more like it.

Every chapter title is a contradiction that turns out not to be one. Unchosen Choice. Effortless Effort. Unsought Seeking. Each one puts up two familiar answers and then refuses both. Achieve more, or want nothing. Rush, or slow down. Hold on, or let go. The book walks up to the obvious middle, declines to name it, and hands the question back.

Along the way: a tree too useless to be worth cutting down, which is the only reason it grew old. A stonecutter who got every single thing he wished for. A boy who could see nothing but the eye of a bird. A carpenter, a tortoise in the mud, and a man who sank a boat full of gold and then went back to work.

Who it is for

History kept its records for the ones who ruled and the ones who tried to. Everybody else was here as well, which is very nearly everybody, and almost none of it was written down. Those are the hours this book is about.

So it is for the person who has done most of it right. The work, the house, the people looked after. And who has started to wonder, quietly, whether some of it was ever theirs to want in the first place.

It is about simplicity as a middle path, and it never once uses the word as an instruction.

A short book. Read it in an afternoon. Then read it again in a year and find a different book inside it.

Your life is not too small to be worth this attention.
