Alan Turing was perhaps the most widely accomplished man of the last century. The range and importance of his achievements are truly staggering. His Cambridge dissertation not only was a major contribution towards solving one of the great mathematical problems of his day, but, even more importantly, first introduced the notion of a universal, programmable computing machine. In Bletchley Park, the British decoding center of WWII, he was the 'indispensable' decoder. His achievement of breaking the German Enigma naval code quite possibly avoided defeat of the Western Allies. Were this not enough, in his short life of 45 years he made significant, sometimes groundbreaking contributions in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Chaos Theory, and Mathematical Biology. These are not easy subjects to popularize and it is not surprising that the rigorous biographies of this unique man have reached only a limited audience. Abandoning the rigor, but remaining historically accurate, this fictional 'biography' presents Turing as he emerges from the descriptions given by his contemporaries. While minimizing details of his scientific contribution as well as those of the coding and decoding process, it emphasizes his role in World War II.
