Synopsis
Organizational “insiders” Steven A. Danley and Dr. Peter Hughes explore the most common dysfunctions preventing managers from promoting healthy, vibrant, and sustainable workplaces in this field manual written in the form of a medical encyclopedia. They identify toxic behaviors and cultures such as “managerial addiction,” which is identified by fixations on fame, power, money, adulation, and territory; “lack of shame,” which is the inability or diminished capacity of a manager/executive to feel embarrassment, disgrace, or ignominy for unscrupulous actions; and “inadequate knowledge of line operations,” which is defined by an inattention to and/or insufficient knowledge of daily operations.
Review
blueink review: "In this well-produced handbook, the authors contend that organizations suffer from diseases and disorders just like people do... This is an excellent book, well written, insightful, clear and concise. Its authors are highly qualified: Steven A. Danley has extensive experience in human resources and performance auditing, while Peter Hughes' career is in executive auditing and finance; both are award winning in their fields."
Foreword Clarion 5-star review: "Danley and Hughes have crafted a business book that outshines others. Management Diseases and Disorders...is a cleverly constructed, creative examination of modern-day business deficiencies...Identifying and classifying these 'diseases and disorders' had to be a significant task, but even more impressive is the insight demonstrated by the authors in describing them and proposing appropriate 'treatments.' Danley and Hughes are incredibly adept at uncovering the conditions themselves and then making them come alive in descriptive, meaningful terms...The text employs a concept that offers a distinctive and high-impact way to highlight universally applicable organizational weaknesses and put forward viable solutions."
Kirkus Reviews: "There's real genius in this book... the authors' ability to parse out the individual conditions is remarkable, as are their keen insights into each specific management problem... An inventive, imaginative, and beautifully crafted management guide."
