The authors were inspired by E.D. Hirsch Jr.'s Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs To Know ( LJ 6/1/87) to create a list of terms and concepts that managers ought to know. Over 500 managers, representing a diversity of industries and organizational sizes, assisted in developing the resulting managerial literacy list, which contains 1200 terms, phrases, or idioms commonly used in business conversations. The list is designed to allow current or aspiring managers to assess their knowledge and determine a plan of managerial development. Definitions of the items are not included. One could consider this a shortcoming of the book or an endorsement of the authors' concern for lifelong learning. Recommended for extensive business collections.
